1994 Mongoose Expert BMX - black on gold

Posted by on

The 1994 Mongoose Expert BMX frame is a classic Mongoose loop tail frame design. Mongoose began making the loop tail frame in the early 1980’s and this design was popular with many BMX brands through that era including hutch and SE bikes. In 1997 a few bikes featured the Mongoose BMX loop tail frame including the Expert 20″ and Expert Pro 24″ cruiser as well as the Menace and Menace 24″ cruiser.

In 1998 Mongoose phased out the loop tail frame design and began looking at completely new frame designs.

For this 1994 Mongoose Expert I wanted to take what was a pretty standard original BMX and make it desirable again. Creating custom colour rides is the thing I like most. I purchased the bike as frame, forks, bars and stem with a loose set of cranks. So I had to rebuild it anyway. After giving all the chrome parts a citric acid bath to remove rust, the finish came up beautifully.

New old stock decals are not available anymore, so I set about designing a black and gold sticker set based on my favourite 1986 Mongoose decal design. Once the decals were complete I set about buying just enough gold parts and mixing that with some black parts to create something amazing.

A new gold Neco alloy headset was one of the first parts I installed. This set off the front end of the bike well and looked great with the lightly polished silver alloy head stem with new gold bolts and the original chrome handlebars.

The silver polished Dia Compe MX2 lever had its black adjusters replaced with a new gold one and gold lock on grips added a few touches of black and gold to the front end.

The black and gold fork decals were matched to new old stock gold Suzue hubs and black shiny side Weinmann rims with silver spokes, gold spoke nipples, gold valve caps and CST comp 3 20″x1.75″ tyres. A Porkchop 44T Mongoose Motomag chainwheel was added to a new set of Mongoose chrome 3 piece cranks and new gold cage pedals.

The rear brakes are a new set of Dia Compe 988 cantilevers, and a new Viscount Dyna seat was installed to the original Mongoose seat post.
